SSCO has been hosting monthly Neighborhood Clean-ups for years, but with the support of the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization, we have been able to expand our program in 2026.
Now, not only are we hosting monthly Neighborhood Clean-ups, but we have recruited volunteer Block Stewards to help keep their corner of the neighborhood clean. SSCO is also tracking the amount of waste collected to demonstrate our impact on our neighborhood and our watershed.

It’s about more than keeping our streets clean…
Every piece of litter our volunteers pick up is one less piece entering our stormwater system and the greater watershed that leads to the Mississippi River.
When litter enters our water system, it begins to break down and releases microplastics and chemicals. This can be dangerous for
wildlife and decreases the oxygen level in water for all living beings. Larger pieces of litter can also be consumed by fish or entangle them, leading to injury or even death.
